Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian has been writing a book about the barrows in England. It will document the treasures that she discovers within. A fascinating letter prompts her to explore the tiny village of Bewlay in remote rural England. She sets out by train with her assistant that same day.
The man who summoned her to her rescue is not present at her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses access to his barrow while the people in the area are wary of the woman who’s going on her own, and (gasp!) wears trousers.
Hob’s Barrow excavation is off in a rough start. And then Thomasina starts having strange dreams…
